NHS Membership Requirements

A student-athlete of Ardrey Kell High School, Luke Stankavage holds a key role in the rotation of the Knights men’s basketball team as a combo guard. Despite the demands of being a varsity player, Luke Stankavage performs well in academics. He is a member of the local chapter of the National Honors Society (NHS).

NHS is a national organization of high school students which represents the commitment of the schools in the four pillars of membership namely, scholarship, service, leadership, and character. NHS provides its members with access to resources, programs, and opportunities to prepare them for college. Membership with NHS goes through a process at the local chapter level.

Students belonging to grade 10 to 12 class who meet the requirements for membership as provided in the chapter by-laws can be admitted as members of the local NHS chapter. They can talk with the chapter adviser to evaluate their eligibility.

In accordance with the NHS national guidelines, a candidate must have a cumulative GPA of at least “85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence.” He or she must possess the spirit of volunteerism and have taken part in school or community works of service. He or she must have worked with or for others, and have demonstrated leadership skills such as resourcefulness and problem-solving in school or community activities. He or she must possess the characteristics of cooperation, honesty and reliability, courtesy, concern, and respect for others.

At the very least, accepted members must demonstrate a commitment to the honor of being NHS members by attending chapter meetings and participating in individual or chapter service projects for the school or the community.

The Differences Between Frisbees and Golf Discs

Skilled student and basketball player Luke Stankavage studies at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. A member of the school’s leadership council and a varsity basketball player, he maintains a 4.4 grade point average and belongs to the National Honor Society. In his free time, Luke Stankavage demonstrates his passion for sports as a Frisbee golf player.

Although Frisbees and golf discs appear similar, they are quite different from one another. In fact, some people get upset when the two terms are used interchangeably.

Perhaps the most obvious differences between the two relates to the size and shape of each piece of equipment. Compared to Frisbees, golf discs are much smaller in size. They average around eight inches long, whereas Frisbees are typically 12 inches long. In addition, most golf discs do not have the rounded lip that Frisbees do. In fact, drivers usually have a pointed lip. Mid-range discs and putters are more rounded and appear more like a Frisbee.

Due to the design differences between Frisbees and golf discs, the drag and aerodynamics also differ between the objects. Golf discs are designed to have less drag than Frisbees, a characteristic that lets them fly farther. Golf discs are also more aerodynamic, so they can fly faster. The aerodynamics of the golf disc does change depending on whether a mid-range disc, putter, or driver is used, but all three fly faster and farther than most Frisbees.

Because of the design differences between the two items, throwing a golf disc correctly is much harder than throwing a Frisbee. Since Frisbees are made from lighter plastic, they are also easier to catch, and fly more accurately than golf discs.

NHS students work for their communities through volunteerism. On average, each local school chapter contributes 1,000 hours of community or school service, $26,000 in cash donations for charity, 1,000 pounds of food donated for national, state, and local causes, as well as 100 pints of blood.

As of this day, over a million students from local chapters in all 50 states, US territories, Canada, and other parts of the world participate in NHS programs and activities. NHS members are recognized for their accomplishments and involvement in school and community activities.
