The 3-point shot has been used with increasing frequency every year in the NBA since the 1997-98 season and, consequently, players who can make these shots with high efficiency are becoming more valued by teams. There were only 12.7 3-point attempts per game during the 1997-98 season, but that number increased to 20 by the 2012-13 season. In 2019-20, more than 34 3-point shots were attempted per game on average.
First introduced in 1979, the 3-point shot was slow to be utilized as a part of teams’ offensive schemes. Its rise over the past couple of decades is due in part to the fact it is a more efficient way to accumulate points. From the 1997-98 season to the 2017-18 season, NBA players averaged 1.05 and 1.16 points per above-the-break and corner 3-point attempt, respectively. Players averaged 0.79 points per 2-point attempt beyond the restricted area during the same time.
